Why do we pray the Lord have mercy at Mass?

In the Eucharistic celebration, we become aware that we need to convert continually in order to obtain divine forgiveness and to participate worthily in the sacred mysteries.

We make a public repentance of our sins through the penitential rite at the beginning of the celebration of Mass, so that the sacrifice may be pleasing to God. The Penitential Rite is a concrete expression of our sinful reality that involves examining our conscience before the merciful presence of God.

Both the minister and the faithful humbly acknowledge our sins, repent of them and implore God's mercy to participate fruitfully in the sacred mysteries.

We ask God for forgiveness, the only one who can remove from our conscience the stain of our sins. And to receive this forgiveness, we also ask "Holy Mary, ever Virgin, the angels, the saints and you, brothers", to intercede for us. We ask forgiveness for our evil thoughts or malicious feelings and intentions, for our hurtful and offensive words, for our actions that harm others, and for our acts of omission, that is, for not having done good to others.
