Do not be afraid... I will watch over you

The Gospel reading is taken from Jesus’ missionary discourse. In the first part, he instructs them on how to proceed in the mission, on what they should and should not bring, and what they should do if they do not want to receive them. But in the second part of the talk, he warns them that it will not be an easy task, as they will face difficulties and persecution. They should know that if they persecuted the Master (Jesus), all the more so they will persecute his disciples; but they need not fear, for they will not be alone; God the Father is aware of each one; for if He takes care of the lives of the sparrows, how much more will He be concerned with the needs of His children.

It is precisely the story of Jeremiah that represents this fear of difficulties. Jeremiah’s tragedy was that the people rejected him for speaking openly in God’s name. Still, he continued to trust in the Lord.

We often complain about difficulties, problems and everything that is difficult for us; but there is no need to fear, because the Lord knows the limit of our strength and will not let anything bad happen to us. However, everything in our power must be done to overcome these difficulties. This is how we grow, this is how we mature and we come to value more everything we have achieved with effort.
