CONFESS MORTAL SINS AT LEAST ONCE A YEAR AND/OR IN DANGER OF DEATH

This phrase expresses a precept of the Church that establishes the time limit and the extreme circumstances in which Catholics have the obligation to confess our mortal sins in order to recover the state of grace, by resorting to the sacrament of Reconciliation.
At least once a year: It is the minimum obligation to ensure that the faithful approach the sacrament and keep their spiritual life in order, especially before fulfilling the commandment to receive communion at Easter.
In danger of death: If a person is seriously ill, injured or about to die, he has the strict obligation to confess before dying.
Mortal sin breaks communion with God, and if a person dies in that state without repentance, it is considered a risk to his eternal salvation. Therefore, in case of imminent danger and if a priest is not available, it is advisable to perform an act of perfect contrition (a deep repentance born of love for God) with the purpose of going to confession as soon as possible.
Although this is the mandatory rule, the Catholic Church encourages believers to go to confession more regularly (e.g., once a month) to strengthen themselves spiritually.
