The two readings that we hear before the Gospel take up the public witness of St. Peter, the authoritative spokesman of the Twelve, and his exhortation to live in accordance with faith in God who raised Christ from the dead. And the Gospel, for its part, takes us into the living and ardent witness of the two pilgrim disciples of Emmaus.
On the evening of the very day of the resurrection, Jesus met the pilgrims from Emmaus. These two disciples, who were returning to their village discouraged and sad, did not recognize him at first. Christ takes advantage of the journey to explain to them the meaning of the events that took place in Jerusalem. Everything that had happened to him in his passion. When it was time for supper, Jesus took the bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them. It was then that they recognized him. It's Jesus, it's Jesus! And they gladly returned to Jerusalem to tell their experience to the apostles who were still fearful behind closed doors. This story portrays the structure of our Masses every Sunday where we meet in community with the Living and Risen Christ who nourishes us with his Word and with the Eucharist in the pilgrimage of our life. And our mission is to be messengers of this New and Good News.
