The sacrament of the anointing of the sick is a rite of healing and spiritual strength of the Catholic Church for those suffering from a serious illness, are in advanced age or are facing major surgeries. It is not only for the moment of death, but it grants comfort, peace, forgiveness of sins and, if appropriate, the recovery of physical health.

It unites the sick person with the Passion of Christ, giving meaning to suffering and strengthening the spirit against fear and anxiety.

It is administered by a priest or bishop, who anoints the sick person with holy oil (blessed olive oil) on the forehead and hands, praying for healing.

It may be given several times if the illness becomes severe or the patient recovers and becomes ill again. It provides strength, comfort, forgiveness of sins if one could not confess, and preparation for eternal life.

This sacrament is based on the biblical tradition of miraculous healings that Jesus of Nazareth enhanced and the Apostle James (5:14-15) urges priests to anoint the sick.
