Invocations to the Lamb of God are the liturgical canticle of the Agnus Dei, which is said or sung during the fraction of the host, just before Communion at the Catholic Mass. They express faith in Jesus as the Lamb of God who, through his sacrifice, takes away the sins of the world, asking for mercy (have mercy on us) and asking for peace for the community. The priest raises the consecrated host, saying the phrase "Behold the Lamb of God"
Lamb of God: Refers to Jesus as the true sacrifice offered for the salvation of mankind, a reference to Old Testament prophecies, such as the Passover lamb.
You take away the sins of the world: It underscores the redemptive power of Jesus, who, by his sacrifice, forgives the sins of all.
Have mercy on us: It is a request for mercy, recognizing human frailty and the need for divine intercession.
Give us peace: It is the supplication for reconciliation, the peace that is born of forgiveness and unity with God and among the faithful.
