The church of living stones
The temple, as the house and place of encounter between God and his people, cannot be considered only in a material sense. In fact, the most important temple is the one that is built with the living stones, which are each believer, each person who is part of the community and gives it life. Many communities do not even have a building to live their faith, but that does not prevent them from coming together to pray, to share their experience of faith and to walk as the people of God amid the reality that surrounds them.
The expulsion of the vendors from the temple is an act of purification, by which Jesus manifests his close relationship with God the Father, from whom comes the authority to remove all that hinders and corrupts the true worship that should be given to him.
Jesus compares himself to the temple, they will destroy it (with his death) but in three days he will rebuild it (with the resurrection). The purification of the house of God is not only external, in the material walls, but an interior, constant purification of each member of the community. That is why we must ask ourselves what our community is like, how is our participation in this sacred place where we gather one or more times on the days of the week. It doesn’t matter if our temple is big or small, humble or luxurious; the most important thing is the life that springs from the faith we have and share with others and with God.
