DO NOT IGNORE THOSE IN NEED

The reading of the prophet Amos and the parable of Lazarus and the rich man, lead us to reflect on the use of wealth and social inequality, which have existed throughout history and continue to exist in our days.

The story that Jesus tells describes the two characters, highlighting the contrast between them. The rich man is clothed in purple and the finest linen, and the poor man's body is covered with sores. The rich feast splendidly not only on feast days but daily, the poor are lying in the doorway of the rich man's house, unable to put into his mouth what falls from the rich man's table. Only dogs that come to look for something in the garbage come to lick their sores. It is not said that the rich man is a thief or that he misuses his power, but he is a person who does not realize the need of the poor, has the poor in front but does not see him.

Although this parable describes the situation of many poor and rich in Jesus' time, our world continues to suffer, on a large scale, from this problem of inequality, of lack of opportunities. It is a wake-up call to take advantage of the time of our lives to work and gain not only material wealth, but also those good deeds that open the door to eternal life for us.
