Prepare the way of the Lord

John the Baptist is undoubtedly one of the most representative characters of the Advent season. It was up to him to prepare the way in the public life of Jesus. When the time was right, he began to prepare the way for the proclamation of the Good News. “A shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse”, and it was necessary to wait for it in a dignified manner. Concretely, John invites conversion to recognize faults, symbolically purifying himself in the waters of the Jordan River.

But what does conversion mean? Following the long prophetic tradition of the people of Israel, John asks them to turn away from injustice, ill-behavior, and religious worship that is devoid of meaning and without compromise. This means “preparing the way and making straight the paths”, making his own the words of the prophet Isaiah, from the so-called Book of Consolation (Is 40:3).
