FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT

It is not easy to forget the past, nor to leave the offenses committed and the offenses received. How then can we understand the promise that God makes to us in the book of Isaiah, where he announces that he is going to build something new, and exhorts us to forget the past?

The answer lies in the beautiful story of the woman accused of adultery in the Gospel of John. The key is sincere repentance in the face of wrongdoing and the firm purpose to change, to convert. That is what Jesus expects of each of us. “Go and sin no more…” he told the woman. And those who wanted to stone her she stopped, pointing out that they too are sinners.

In this season of Lent, may we also have that great disposition not to repeat the sins committed in the past and to seek to be better every day. Like St. Paul, “leaving what is left behind... I rush forward, in search of the goal to which God calls us from heaven.”
